This southern Italian pottery may be an inkpot due to its thin neck and flat bottom, because this shape meant that it could not be easily knocked over and thus no valuable ink was spilled. On the other hand, it could also be an aryballos with an unusual shape, normally these objects were rather rounded at the bottom. Possibly, however, this object should not be immediately recognisable as an aryballos, because they were used to store precious perfumes or oils.
